Chapter 13
She sat up in a forest, with sunlight streaming down between the leaves of lush, overhanging trees and a meadow of flowers just ahead of her. A tall shadow loomed in the meadow, standing with his head turned up to bask in the bright sunlight. Vincent.
He turned when she approached him, his raptor gaze following her every step, as intense as it was in her waking life.
She opened her arms for him, and he smiled and welcomed her in, pulling her into a hug. As if nothing was wrong, and she hadnât hurt him. When she tilted her head up for a kiss, he kissed her. No hesitation, no anger.
Even in dreams, he was kind.
She pulled back, tears spilling down her face.
âI love you,â she said, sobbing harder once the words were out. âI love you and Iâve only known you a few days.â
Red eyes widened. His hands held her shoulders.
She laughed through her tears. âI know, Iâm stupid, arenât I? A man gives me a tiny bit of affection and Iâm lost for him.â She sniffed and shook her head. âNo, thatâs not right, youâve given me so much. Youâve been so nice to me and treated me like I mattered. Youâve let me into your home, you looked out for me⦠In a few days, Iâve gotten more from you than Iâve ever gotten from anyone else in my whole life.â
He watched her for a moment more then she was in his arms again, squeezed against a hard chest. âYou are everything to me. Iâd give you the whole world if you but asked it of me,â he breathed against her ear.
She smiled, her tears staining his dark shirt. She breathed in his familiar scent and relaxed into his arms. She felt weightless. Here, she could tell him anything and thereâd be no repercussions. Didnât have to worry about making a man run away with clingy words, or what he might think of her in the morning.
âI want to be with you forever, but I donât want you to die.â
He kissed behind her ear. âI can give you forever, Mira. In this life and wherever the next may take you.â
That only made her feel worse. If there was a chance she could still let him go and let him live⦠âVincent, I donât want to be the reason you die. Yasmin says youâve done a lot to protect people, that youâre really important. I can leave, I can let you go beforeââ
He pressed a kiss to her mouth. âNo. It is already done, there is no undoing this, and I canât let you go. Humans are resourceful, theyâll figure out how to protect themselves once Iâm gone. And all I was doing was making up for the damage I had caused, nothing more.â
His words brought her a selfish relief. The part of her that was already attached to him rejoiced. The thought that he was hers took hold. It was too late to do anything to change this.
